yarn along

Joining in with the yarn along this week.

The purple in the first picture is a birthday present for a friend of mine, a crocheted scarf, look here for the post I did on how to make it. The second picture is the pair of fingerless gloves I'm making for myself, I've adapted them quite a bit from the pattern. I kept the same colour work but made them shorter, changed the colouring around the fingers and didn't do individual fingers. I got the first one done and probably would be much further on the second if I hadn't got completely distracted by these books!

I started reading twilight by Stephanie Meyer on Saturday and I finished that one and am already  nearly halfway through the second in the series, new moon.I never got into the vampire thing when it started and I haven't seen any of the films, I was sceptical when I was given these books by a friend but, oh boy, they are sooo good. I am completely captivated and any second I can possibly get I have my nose in the book - stirring dinner, feeding roghan, when I should be sleeping etc... If you haven't tried them I would fully recommend that you do. Maybe by next week I'll have read the 4 books and will have done some more knitting!

at our place

This week has been, baby swimming, rides in the car, make believe, finding love, exploring, creating, painting, stroking, candle making, and beautiful blooming spring.

spring table

When the weather started to warm up a little we put a little potted iris on top of our seasons table with the idea that when it flowered it would be time to change to a spring seasons table. Well, it flowered yesterday, so despite it being a little early we have changed to spring and it looks so lovely and cheery at the top of the stairs.

Happy spring time to all!

12 months of giving: lavender pillow

One of our goals for this year is a project called 12 months of giving, our first project in January was this sponsored walk. Faith decided she wanted to get crafty and did a beautiful embroidery on a felt heart. She then turned her embroidery into a little stuffed pillow with lavender inside.

It was a gift for her nana and was happily given and gratefully received. A lesson in the small acts of kindness being just as important as the bigger ones. Perhaps even more so as they are more frequent.

Really looking forward to what others have been up to for their 12 months of giving.

recipe: rhubarb jam

I always enjoy the rhubarb at the beginning of the year and have never preserved it before, so this year I thought I would attempt jam.

I used a basic recipe that I have used for strawberries for years but just used less lemon juice as the rhubarb is already quite sour.

For every 1lb of rhubarb - 1lb of sugar and juice of half a lemon (note: for strawberries I would use the juice of a whole lemon).

Chop up the rhubarb and gently simmer all the ingredients until reaching setting point. Test for setting point by dropping a little of the jam onto a cold plate (one that has been put in the fridge), drag your finger through the jam and if it stays separate it is done, if it seeps back together it needs more cooking.

About halfway through we put in some grated ginger, about a 1" piece per 1lb of fruit. This tastes good to me but is optional. When I make this again I think I will try cinnamon.

This is already finding its way onto our toast but I think it might find its way onto meat as well as it's quite tart, rather like cranberry sauce.

make: filet crochet scarf

Just finished making this scarf this morning, it is for a friends birthday in march, I designed this scarf as I went along and I am very happy with the result.
Yarn: debbie bliss, fez. 85% wool, 15% camel 2 balls aran/worsted (only used a small amount of the 2nd ball so there is enough to use for stripes in a complementary hat)
Hook: 6.5mm / K
UK abbreviations. For american readers, a tr is what you would call a dc I believe, I don't know what you would call a trtr (triple treble - wrap yarn 3 times)

Foundation: ch17
Row 1: tr into 3rd ch from hook, tr across (2 ch at the beginning count as tr, 15 tr in row)
Row 2: ch 2 (counts as 1st tr) tr across, the last tr is into the top of the 2 ch .
Row 3: as row 2
note: this scarf stays the same width the whole way so keep checking you have 15, it is quite easy to forget to go into the top of the ch at the end).
edit - there is a row as row 7 here!
Row 4: ch 4, trtr (triple treble, wrap yarn around 3 times) across.
Row 5: as row 4
Row 6: ch 2, tr across
Row 7: filet row - ch3, tr into the 3rd tr on the row below (so you have the 1st treble with the 2ch coming out, the 2nd is free and the 3rd will have this tr going into it. You will have made a little box), *ch1, miss next st, tr into next tr, rep from * across. Your last treble goes into the top of the ch2 from the previous row.

With the filet row you will have created a row of 7 little boxes.

Heart  -
Row 8: ch3, tr into 3rd tr on row below, (ch1, tr into next tr, leave the ch space) twice, tr into ch space, tr into next tr, (ch1, tr into next tr) twice, ch1, tr into top of ch2.
Row 9: ch3, tr into next tr, ch1, tr into next tr, tr in ch space, tr in next 3 tr, tr in ch space, tr in next tr, ch1, tr in next tr, ch1, tr in top of ch 2.
Row 10: ch3, tr into next tr, tr in ch space, tr in next 7 tr, tr in ch space, tr in next tr, ch1, tr in top of ch 2.
Row 11: ch2, tr in ch space, tr in next 11 tr, tr in ch space, tr in top of ch2.
Row 12: ch 2, tr across, last tr going in top of ch2. Check you still have 15 at this point.
Row 13: ch2, tr in next 6 tr, ch 1,miss next tr,  tr in next 7 tr, last tr goes into top of ch 2.
Row 14: ch3, tr into next 3 tr, ch 1, miss next tr, tr into next tr, ch 1, tr into next tr, ch 1, miss next tr, tr into next 3 tr, ch 1, tr into top of ch2.

so... that seems incredibly wordy and complicated, I got confused just writing that and had to read through it several times. It really is very simple so here is a different way of looking at it.

Basically you continue making your 7 little boxes but fill some of the boxes in with a tr instead of a ch space. Here is the picture of the pattern to create, starting at the bottom.

After the heart motif, do a row of open squares, as Row 7.

Diamond -

I think working from this picture would be easier but have included the wordy instructions afterwards.

next row: ch3, tr into next tr, (ch1, tr into next tr) twice, tr into ch space, tr into next tr, (ch1, tr into next tr) 3 times, last tr into top of ch2.
next row: ch3, tr into next tr, ch 1, tr into next tr, tr into ch space, tr into next 3 tr, tr into ch space, tr into next tr, ch 1, tr into next tr, ch1, tr into top of ch 2.
next row: ch3, tr into next tr, tr in ch space, tr in next 7 tr, tr in ch space, tr in next tr, ch 1, tr in top of ch2.
next row: ch2, tr in ch space, tr in next 11 tr, tr in ch space, tr in top of ch2.
next row: ch 3, miss next tr, tr in next 11 tr, ch1, miss next tr, tr in top of ch2.
next row: ch3, tr in next tr, ch1, miss next tr, tr in next 7 tr, ch1, miss next tr, tr in next tr, ch 1, tr in top of ch 2.
next row: ch3, tr in next tr, ch1, tr in next tr, ch1, miss next tr, tr in next 3 tr, ch1, miss next tr, tr in next tr, ch1, tr in next tr, ch1, tr in top of ch2.

Scarf structure:
Work first 7 rows.
heart
row 7
diamond
row 7
heart
row 7
diamond
row 7
heart backwards (see note)
row 7
diamond
row 7
heart backwards
rows 7 - 1 (the beginning backwards so the ends of the scarf are symmetrical)

note: The first 2 hearts are worked from the bottom of the heart up (rows 8-14), then the last 2 hearts are worked from the top of the heart down (rows 14-8). This is done so that when the ends of the scarf hang down the hearts are all facing the right way.

This scarf is really open to creativity, once you get the hang of filet crochet it is quite simple to fill in squares here and there to make your own designs. I did this scarf in aran/worsted weight yarn but if you have thinner yarn then you could add a few more motif repeats to get the right length, for more width an extra filet box or 2 on each side would look good, maybe with the outer box always filled in to create a border. To add extra width just add 2 ch onto your foundation ch for each extra box you want. I used the trtr at the ends to make a more open mesh there but if you don't want this just do 3 of row 7 instead of rows 4 and 5.

Happy crafting!

a new skill

Faith has learnt to knit! We tried this last year and she wasn't really ready but this time she asked me to show her and picked it up right away, This small strip for a bracelet took her about 2 weeks to complete and we are all so proud of it. It must be the most admired tiny strip of knitting ever but it symbolises so much more, the learning of a new skill and another step on the road.

duvet day

On rainy days its good to get out there splashing in puddles and squishing in the mud, but we like getting home too...

... if the world had more duvet days I think it would be a happier place.

yarn along

Joining in again with Ginny for the yarn along.
No reading really for me this week but plenty of knitting. Most excitingly I finally finished those mittens!

Loads of time and effort in those, admittedly I did have a baby in between the start and finish of these but still I seem to have been working on them forever.

Also made this really really cute baby hood for Roghan from this pattern. I used Debbie Bliss cashmerino yarn, it is gorgeously soft.

Just cast on for some fingerless gloves for me too. Really? For me? It has been a very long time since I got to wear anything I knitted, so although it feels a bit naughty I'm just going to do it... quickly though so maybe no-one will notice!

2 wheelin'!

Faith rode her bike 2 wheeled for the first time this week! With much falling off and diving off and wobbling around we progressed around the edge of the park until that moment when with wild leaning from side to side she started moving forwards as well ...

...go!

Stopping is a fling-the-bike-to-one-side-while-leaping-to-the-other manoeuvre but so far serious injury has been avoided!

recipe: chai concentrate

If you like chai, you must try this recipe it is sooo yummy and my new favourite winter drink. I was inspired by a recipie I found on 'A wooden nest' blog but I think she got it from elsewhere too. I haven't got such a sweet tooth as some so this recipe doesn't have as much sugar as most chai recipes. Also, chai is usually made with orange but when I first tried it I didn't have any oranges so I used a lemon, and I liked it!

- A saucepan of water I think its about 8 / 9 cups but this is not really crucial.
bring the water just up to the boil, this is just about the amount of time it takes me to grate and grind and squeeze the other ingredients.

- 2 or 3 pieces of cinnamon or a dessert spoonful of ground cinnamon.
- big hunk of ginger, this obviously depends on how much you like ginger but I usually use a whole piece about  or 6 inches. If your ginger is young and fresh with a light skin then leave it on but if it has gone a bit drier then its best to peel it as the skin can be bitter then. Grate the ginger.
- tablespoon of cardamom pods
- 4 star anise
- tablespoon of cloves
- teaspoon black pepper, just smashed to let the flavour out.
- teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 lemon, grate the zest off and then roughly chop and squeeze up the rest, the whole lot goes in we're just trying to release as much flavour as possible. This step can be done with an orange if you kike but I really like the lemony flavour.
- A couple of big handfuls of tea leaves. I have never measured this but just enough to make the water a good dark colour, remember this is a concentrate so you want it darker than you would drink normally. Its roughly a mug full I would guess?!

So, when your water is hot, turn off the heat and put everything you just prepared in. Don't put them into boiling water as it will taste bitter. Put the lid on your pan and leave to steep for about an hour.

Strain out your liquid and then add,
- 2 tbsp brown sugar (I have seen this recipe with up to a cup full of sugar so do it to your taste, you can always add a little to individual cups as you drink it).
- 1 tbsp honey
 - 1 tbsp vanilla

If your liquid is still warm enough to dissolve these then all well and good, if not then just dissolve them in a little hot water first and then pour in.

Enjoy this drink at a ratio of 1 part concentrate, 1 part milk heated up to just before boiling. I have also heard that it is a good summer drink cold over ice but have never tried it.

We store ours in a fancy decanter from the charity shop and leave it out on show where it looks very nice! Keeps for a few weeks but doesn't usually last that long.

yarn along

Joining in with the yarn along this week.

I haven't had much knitting time this week but I did manage to finish off a pair of socks which will be heading out in the post today.

I have been reading cottage economy by William Cobbett. It was written in 1821 as a book on budgeting, running house and home and smallholding. A lot of the views are definitely of that time and he goes off into a spout of ranting every now and then but still it is a fascinating read and a real slice of history.
